Gladiator II 2024
First watched as an airplane double feature after the original movie. This builds on the themes of the original in an interesting way, but ultimately cannot escape the impulse of great man shit. In this version, the elites have no real knowledge or theory of rulership - which lines up with a *lot* of actual history. Despite stereotypes, the portrayal of the twin emperors was *a fucking blast*.

Gladiator 2000
Rewatched as part of an airplane double feature with Gladiator II - this movie is as weird as ever, and lives up to the "ihr seid verflucte hunda" audio stingers at basketball games. It has an uncomfortable number of roman salutes tied in with the language of the american dream and american empire, especially given the last few months. As with the norm, it understands "populism" but not any kind of positive vision for the future.
One relevant woman, entirely locked down by the patriarchy, and no notable queers.
