Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls 1995
Before beginning this review I must emphasize that I'm very heavily biased, as I have fond memories of watching this film repeatedly as a child, which is bound to have coloured my current opinion of it. With all that said:
I'm not exactly proud to admit that I laughed like an idiot. But I did laugh like an idiot.

Solid performances (particularly from the child actors), effective minimalist direction and sound design, surprisingly gruesome imagery - but I think it's always a bad sign in a thriller when you guess the twist within the first five minutes, and it's not even an original twist. The slow pace, muted, ascetic visuals and observational cinematography reminded me a little bit of Spoorloos. Well-crafted but unremarkable psychological horror: the directors need a better screenplay.

I didn't mind the slow pace of Arrival, as it felt like the film had a lot of lore and thematic ground to cover which justified the running time. In this case, it felt as if the screenplay was written as a one-hour TV drama, the project was greenlit as a feature-length, and they just decided to pad out the running time by one-third by adding in loads of extraneous shots. I'm increasingly starting to get the impression that this generation of film critics will heap critical adulation on any film that makes even the most cursory effort to give off a pseudo-80s vibe.
