So much to love here, and incredibly strong for a debut directorial swing. I just wish it was a little bit tighter / sharper.
Goofy cgi gags, cartoonish back-of-the-house acting and constant lotr-inspired camera sweeps.
Some of the changes it makes from the book make it more cheesy in a fun way (the whole climax confrontation at the end), while some of the others make it more morally disagreeable (how Tristan treats Victoria and her fiance at the end).
Plus...I know it's from the early 2000s, and things were just kinda like this back then...but did it really benefit from multiple implied SA jokes? Strange decision for your breezy slapstick fairytale adaptation.
At least it's genuinely never boring haha
It's a fun time!
I was especially smitten with some of the color palettes and the groovy flute-driven soundtrack.
Definitely not Miyazaki's greatest, but still full of charm, surprises and excellent animation.
