Bruce Lee does a lot of impressive moves in this, but his best move is the little nerd walk he does while he's disguised as the telephone repairman.

The Big Boss 1971
My first Bruce Lee film. Basically every time Bruce Lee was not in a scene I was thinking "I can't wait for Bruce Lee to come back." His screen presence, speed, and control over his movements is just on another level compared to the rest of the cast. It's like watching Goku spar with Yamcha and Tien in DBZ.

The Elephant Man 1980
Good performances and some very nice black and white photography, but ultimately this film doesn't have much to say. It's profoundly incurious about its title subject, taking the lazy route of "wow, he's so brave because he's suffered so much." There are potentially challenging ideas that come up, like the ugly side of Merrick's relationship with Dr. Treves, but they don't go anywhere. Without complexity, most of what we're left with is mawkish perseverance porn.

Deep Cover 1992
Fantastic neo-noir that's elevated by its understanding of race in America and the politics behind the War on Drugs. Every lead turns in a great performance, particularly Fishburne who sells his character's anguish while also pushing his coolness levels to the max. Also, remarkably efficient at getting its story across. There's not a dull moment or a wasted scene, but it still gives its beats room to breathe. Totally didn't know what I was going to get with this and it wound up being an absolute banger.
