The Passion of Joan of Arc 1928
Joan of Arc had style
Dreyer had style. Transcendental cinema. The difference between church & god. God as something that almost transcends religion. God as purpose. The church as the worldly manifestation of satan. Wicked expressionistic cinematography. I think that maybe 15 of the 20 best close ups of faces i’ve ever seen in movies comes from this one. Something about the acting, the cinematography, the costumes & the hair, the context, and the music as well, elevates it to something really really special.

A dissection of one single event, and magnifying all the elements around it. An anatomy of a fall. This movie is so horrifying in such a specific way. Your very private life made public through the lens of you possibly being a murderer. The film does such a great job of initially showing the horrifying dehumanizing process of being put in trial, instead of having time to grieve. And then at a certain point i caught myself thinking:
