A simple movie with a straightforward message about how we don’t deserve this planet. Typically any Asian parent would smack the sh*t out of the kid if they did what Michael did in the first 30 minutes of the movie.
To anyone who hates this, Marie Antoinette’s decapitated head would say “let them eat cake”. The French are just better at some things - aircraft from Airbus, Impressionist music by Debussy, Dior, and now this ceremony. And fact - Celine Dion won the first gold medal that night.

It’s a good movie but I didn’t walk away feeling inspired about lacquer or crafts. Felt like the movie was being ambitious about articulating the many flaws of modern Japanese society. The key messages of the movie felt scattered halfway through. Was a pity that the immersive lacquerware making process at the first half of the plot was derailed by the ex wife, trader’s clients, the florist and the funeral.
