  Incomprehensible fever dream that seems almost purposefully frustrating. I love Malick’s Badlands and Days of Heaven but this is a complete departure from who he was when he directed those films.

  The New World is baffling in its execution. A high budget period piece drama that is not at all concerned about telling a story, it’s more about the vibes. This is especially clear when you think about the fact that you can’t hear what anyone is fucking saying.

  enjoyed the book, and this movie felt like it was devoid of everything that made made the book special. devoid of life and any real scares, saved by set design and a groundwork that was laid back in 1980. honestly frustrating how much potential this had. even the extra 30 min from the directors cut couldn’t save it. I think Flanagan revels in torturing his characters a little too much. the book was about overcoming hardships for a happy ending and I don’t feel like any of that translated to screen. complete waste
