This is one of those films that I’d watch with my dad whenever it showed up on cable so it’s a special one that way.
But it’s also fun to just watch these stars off in beautiful places being beautiful. Sure, there’s an ugliness of spirit in each of them to one degree or another but does that really matter when you get to watch Diane Riggs sunbathing on a beach or even Roddy McDowell just being a catty bitch…
Infernal Affairs > The Departed
On a 2nd viewing, where I could just give myself over to the story, the movie keeps everything amped up. There’s tension through the whole thing as the movie races to the final confrontation of these two cops. Lau and Leung are incredible in the whole thing, both given into the motivations and desperation of their characters.
I think that my biggest problem with Interstellar is that it's just sloppy. Looking back on his two best movies, Memento and The Prestige, there's a precision to those. Inception is also built around the ideas of precision and the best moments of his Batman trilogy are so strong and sharp. But in Interstellar, I think he allows the grandness to take control of the movie and just loses sight of these things.

I may have pulled the blanket up to cover my eyes once or twice during my watch. Carpenter tells a suspenseful story right from the beginning, telling you what you’re going to get in the first shot. It’s full of “hey, it’s that guy…” performances that just help drive the paranoia during this snowy apocalypse.
