the symbolism in the severed phone is perfect.
rips the phone apart, takes the receiver all the way to Utah and leaves it there with the people tormenting his life — the phone serves as a reminder of the mistake he made when dialing the hotline. by taking the phone to the source of his problem he is taking control of the situation, acknowledging his screwup, and confronting the problem at the source (of the phone call). a magnificently subtle detail that is easily overlooked given Barry’s tendency towards erratic behavior
