One of the most grounded Bergman works, with a tone reminiscent of the domestic dramas from Cassavetes. The omission of score and use of long takes allowed room for the performances to really shine, and at times gave the piece a play-like quality. beautiful in so many ways! I just do not think it justifies it’s insane runtime (unlike Yi Yi, which is undoubtedly Yang’s masterpiece in my opinion). the highlights of the film for me were the intimate family moments, specifically between Si’r and his father which were just incredible. sadly, a majority of the movie was bogged down by youth gang subplots involving characters that I didn’t really care about. there is a damn near flawless movie somewhere in here if they trimmed off about an hour, because the craft is undeniably amazing.

yeah, this one really fucking resonated with me. I can’t put it into words, but I’ll just say that I haven’t really related to a protagonist in a film this much for a long while. an absolute master class in writing and acting. I definitely need to go back and check out more of trier’s filmography.
