Not terrible but it ill-advisedly removes all traces of eccentricity from Wonka's character -- there's no way Johnny Depp's (or even Gene Wilder's) Wonka was hatched from this. It's sentimental, borderline cloying, and ... a musical?

Quadrophenia 1979
Holds up well (first saw it c. 1980 or so), the soundtrack is great (I'm not a fan of the album Quadrophenia, but with visuals it works well), but, pedantic me, I was reminded again of an obvious faux-pas: at the frantic house party where all the mods are dancing away, you can see beside the turntable a Who album.
