In Dubious Battle 2016
Franco’s film didn’t demonstrate an understanding of Steinbeck’s novel. Franco rearranges and distorts key elements of plot, characterization, and the political ideology contained in the source. Franco’s affinity for Mac shows an idealized caricature rather than the utilitarian, calculating Mac. Jim seems like a romantic kid fooled with Marxist ideals which is pretty far away from the direction of Steinbeck’s writing. Franco fundamentally miscommunicated the role of Mac and Jim in organizing the strike, placing them at the forefront rather than dictating by proxy. Really wanted to like this, but it is not great.
