Brokeback Mountain 2005
It’s all about the hats. Heath and Jake had cowboy hats at the start and they were banging. Anne had a cowboy hat and she was banging Jake. Jake banged another guy with a cowboy hat. The boss had a hat but had no cowboy curve and he was a boring asshole. In the end Heath’s hat got floppy and lost the cowboy curve and all he ever did was flake on the important stuff for the round up.
Very nice to look at. Plenty of great character work, but I’m not too moved by the slow drip feed of the story over time.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters 2007
The best doco about an elite, niche game community soon to be knocked off top by the Finskaroos doco.

They Live 1988
Smart movie disguised as a dumb movie. Love how they use the language of the capitalistic 80s action movie to make a statement about growing consumerism and class divide. The metaphor of the glasses is a great vehicle for representing political thinking frameworks. The moments that seem absurd, such as the long fist fight perfectly elevate core ideas of the film. People don’t want to break the illusion they live in and it’s awfully hard to convince them to do so.

Basic Instinct 1992
All the men in this are so dumb and ugly and all the women are so smart and sexy! Predictable and cliche things are done in a thoughtfully subversive way, making it work on a very base, braindead and titillating way, but also in a very thoughtful and deep way. Sharon Stone’s character starts out so surface level, but I don’t think it’s till the end that we unlock her depth.
Only gripe is it might be a bit red herring heavy.Translated from by
