Chalamet is as great as advertised. But the fact that I came away wanting to learn more about Joan Baez is, I reckon, why this film is a success.

    One for you, Dad.

Extra 1/2 star because I'm choosing to believe that people in the 1890s actually routinely inserted cool pantun and peribahasa in everyday dialogue. I can get behind that.

Also, justice for Rokiah, the only character who I had any sympathy for.

My first thought upon watching this was: Frances McDormand had better have given one hell of a performance to deserve the Oscar over Sally Hawkins. The film is beautifully shot, the production design is immaculate and the music memorable. But it was Hawkins' brilliant performance that served as the movie's emotional core. Her ability to convey a multiplicity of emotions with just signs, gestures and expressions was not only incredible, but crucial for adding believability to the story.

Poignant and bittersweet. The deliberate pacing added to the lazy, summertime atmosphere in which the film is set. Cinematography was fantastic, combining some beautiful scenery shots of the Italian countryside with interesting use of camera angles.
