Incredibly tight, I’m struggling to think of a more masterfully done film in recent history. Even more gripping on second watch. A deeply humanistic film, concerned most with getting to the core of all that we truly are instead of what we desperately believe to be.
All I allowed myself to know about this film was that Weerasethakul went to Colombia and was so moved that he had to make a film there. I felt I knew what he was referring to, without being able to describe it, and Memoria proves this was correct. There’s a scene near the beginning of the film where Jessica is walking in the city and the loud bang sounds off—and a passerby runs off in fear. I had such a visceral…
