Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s snub for a Best Actress nomination will be looked back on as the most confusing what the **** moment of the 2024 Academy Awards. What a powerhouse performance. Loud, quiet, charged. Michele Austin for Supporting as well. Loved this movie.

Aftersun (2022). A poignant snapshot of sincere parenthood as it overlaps with a child’s looming adolescence. This is a brilliantly understated first feature from writer-director Charlotte Wells, whose stylistic choices can seem both elusive yet fitting for the film’s ethos. Case in point, there are a handful of shots that just lull and linger a bit too long, as if they’re attempts at holding onto memory before the people in them eventually grow, evolve, or don’t. One of my favorites of the year.
