Interesting concept, had some good moments and several beautiful shots. When watching older movies, it’s important to consider them in context of other films at the time. Visually, Night of the Hunter is darker and more interesting than many, yet lacked in several areas that makes it feel poorly acted, clunky and unpolished. Spoiler: when over-acting Mitchum pops up, gets shot, then runs out the house screaming like a clown, it’s sadly a laugh out loud moment. In my opinion, nowhere near the same level as better movies of the same period.
I watched this when it came out at the Zeitgeist theater in New Orleans. As well as I can remember, it was painful to watch, so boring. It wasn’t until after that I realized how great a play it is. It’s really through the experience that you understand the concept. Very interesting kind of interactivity. 5 stars and I will never watch it again.
