A great movie about the greatest sport in the world. Funny, understated, quiet, and it breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart.

I know I'm not breaking new ground by pointing out that Haley Joel Osment gave the performance of a lifetime at 10 years old but holy shit. Undoubtedly it hit different because of a recent death in the family but that scene in the car was an all-timer. For all the hullabaloo around Bruce Willi's character and the associated plot point - and to be clear I loved all the clever framing/editing that was done around that - this movie really is Osment and Toni Collette's show.

Makoto Shinkai makes movies about the rifts that form between us that make it feel impossible to love, but that can only be crossed by loving anyway. I hope he never stops.

"Why are there people like Frank? Why is there so much trouble in this world?" are questions Kyle MacLachlan's character asked in Blue Velvet and Kyle MacLachlan's character continued to ponder this throughout Twin Peaks and The Return. And even though Lynch famously will laugh and not answer pointed questions about the meaning of his work, I think he answered it in Part 8.
I'm still considering Eraserhead as my favorite Lynch film, but only Blue Velvet so far has legitimately haunted my dreams.
