The film is great, it seems we all agree. But all day it’s been bugging me: as we join John Merrick’s standing ovation, are they/we just patting ourselves on the back? Is the gratification and catharsis of seeing Merrick’s “triumph” reprehensible? Is the cinema the new circus? Is this film exploitative? What would Mrs Motherhead say about our charitable reviews? What is care? Who benefits from it? Can an act ever be truly selfless?
