Un thriller noir melodramàtic, discursivament paral·lel a la seva anterior Walk Cheerfully (1930). Aquí, però, amb l’encertada elecció d’atorgar el pes a la forma en el lloc del diàleg, cosa que acaba suposant un reforçament decisiu del vessant humanista del film.
Després d’aquest visionat, no em queda cap dubte que la predilecció minimalista per la qual és conegut Ozu, és en realitat, el fruit d’una experiència plàstica prèvia, avantatjada a la d’Orson Welles.
