Sing Sing 2023
Incredible. Genuinely confused by how badly you have to fuck up a release for this movie to be an Oscar afterthought. Maybe the clearest case of A24 not being as good for the film world as they claim to be.
The performances in this movie are so natural and the writing is so on point. There’s a very clear sense of when to give fragments and when to give scenes. The end result is stunning and has some of the most emotional and alive filmmaking I’ve seen in awhile.

Having seen two cleopatra adaptations now (this and the 60s Elizabeth Taylor version) I think maybe this story just doesn’t work well as a movie? It’s essentially the same story told twice in a row (Cleopatra seduces a powerful Roman to gain power, but the rest of Rome revolts at the idea of a powerful woman and the man fails to create an empire) and Cleopatra isn’t particularly dynamic across her arc.
