Todd Haynes not only covers the Velvets in a comprehensive way, but also situates them in the context of the postwar world of avant Garde art, and does all this in a visually striking way. All music documentaries should be this good. Hell, all music documentaries should be even half this good

Somewhere deep inside this tale of two losers raping and sexually assaulting their way through the south of France you might be able to find an interesting critique of masculinity. Except that it's clear that Bertrand Blier thinks these guys are charming rather than loathsome. A film that is both exceptionally French and exceptionally of its time.

Basically they had enough money in the budget to buy some basic makeup effects and hire John Saxon for a day and a half of filming. The rest of the cast is community theater-grade. Douglas Schulze is every bit as talented a screenwriter as he is a director, which is to say he isn't. Half a star extra for charming amateurism, but not much else.
