This movie really thought it was doing somethin.
Had the potential to be an interesting short film and missed every opportunity to capitalize on the dread they were trying to build. I felt the most suspense just waiting for it to finally end.
Cheap jump scares, painfully overdone filter. It felt like I was watching elevator music.
I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did. It took an almost entirely unrelatable setting and still delivered a ubiquitously relatable sense of isolation, meaninglessness, abandonment, and loneliness. It somehow simultaneously radiated charm and dark humor. The casting and acting was incredible and I felt deeply empathetic for each character’s unique brand of boredom and longing for not only connection, but meaning.I sat through the entire credits wading through a real sense of unearthed sadness. I also wept for a long time over a donkey.
“Some things there’s no moving on from. And I think that’s a good thing”.
Even though it was incredibly distracting once I knew cate blanchett was the voice of the monkey (the RANGE on that queen), this movie was deeply touching in a way Disney could never. left me thinking on the ephemeral preciousness of love and life and friends, and with some hope that we may have at least some power to press beyond unthinkable loss and grief.
