This is a little more R-rated than I thought it needed to be, but other than that it's hard for me to fault it.
Mr. Washington was justly nominated but how Kelly Reilly got overlooked is beyond me; every performance is good.
An addict in full denial is painful to watch, and this is not an exception. It isn't easy to see this level of self-destruction. I know there is room to find the ending preachy or sappy but I have known too many addicts and ex-cons who have come to a similar conclusion as Whip Whitaker does to agree with that.Translated from by -

Lincoln 2012
Visually beautiful- the cinematography & design walk evenly between bleak, bleached exteriors and richly textured, often dark interiors. Emotionally compelling - this was a complex legal & political battle fought for many reasons, and the writing brings all the threads together in a way that is dramatically satisfying without becoming preachy or sappy.
Truly good acting in all corners - some of both Day-Lewis' and Sally Field's best work.
