The lack of hope and purpose manifest in angst and nihilism. Couldn't help but think of the drifting individuals in Heiward Maks's High Noon playing out a parallel narrative in the next neighborhood. Humour and friendship serve as a fragile anchor in a bleak world. Against this backdrop, Autumn Moon longs to be hero. For him, sacrifice was never a question, but society is ruthless, and survival proves to be the cruellest fate when you're surrounded by loss.

The gun dance scene and score was executed very thoughtfully and with artistry.

On life and death, on confucian kinship and it's inherent ties to generational trauma. On death and on breaking that generational trauma. On loss and the weight of life. On carrying the burden of tradition and on breaking that tradition. On respect and on the familial duty to care. How many of us can resonate?

Wow all the characters are so intense and all the hetero people are hypersexual caricatures. The garish visuals and the rapid cuts between scenes is so coded in teenage internet language of the 90s, plus the fact that I watched this on internet archive and was interrupted by endless buffering. And then the alien subplot just somehow makes it so much more queer.

Nelly's deep compassion and connection towards her new friend Marion parallels as an expression of care and comfort towards her own mother. Crafted through the authenticity of Nelly and Marion's pure interactions and the simplicity of their innocent but farsighted dialogues, it showcases the capacity of a child's love and affection towards her family, a quality that is often taken for granted and underrepresented.
