    Skin Game

    ★★★½

A charmer of a movie about honor among thieves. Great performances all around, especially from Lou Gossett Jr. RIP

Gossett's Jason constantly tries to get Garner's Quince to understand the terror of slavery and the danger he faces. Slavery's true brutality is hinted at, but absent.

Touches upon Bleeding Kansas, with an awesome historical cameo.

    Roman Holiday

A tightly-scripted, incredibly lighthearted tragedy dressed up as a screwball comedy. Audrey Hepburn's note-perfect Princess Anne escapes the gilded cage of princesshood for one 24 hour period before the weight of her duty forces her to return.

The only mercy she receives is that Gregory Peck's reporter Mr. Bradley doesn't exploit her with tabloid journalism. What a guy!

But seriously, great chemistry between the leads and extensive coverage of Rome's ancient landmarks. Italians are depicted as chivalrous and kind-hearted people.

Succession but with more whole-hearted belly laughter.

Katherine Hepburn as Eleanor is flawless casting.

Denis Lavant swoops in with a maniacal ode to the art of performance. The acting equivalent of eating a skyscraper over the course of a year. Breathtaking commitment.

Holy Motors meditates on the masks we all wear, while simultaneously paying homage to decades of film and stage production.

Somehow, through sheer willpower, Lavant prevents this movie from being pretentious.

    A must see.
