  One of those films that could not work without due diligence and careful sensitivity for every piece of the process. Harsh lighting to get perfectly outlined shadows, production design mired in smoke and dilapidation to achieve a symbolically post-apocalyptic landscape, a genre blended score to showcase the bizarre emotional momentum of the characters, momentary color to do THAT thing. Mise-en-scene this face-meltingly gorgeous should almost be illegal.
