Second viewing is even more powerful. Close Up was one of the first Iranian films I watched. It blew me away, but I wished I understood more of the references that Hossein makes during his trial. Since my first viewing, I’ve become more familiar with the work of Kiarostami and Makhmalbaf. Hello engineer.
I’ll never get enough of Kiarostami’s portrayals of Iranian village life. He highlights the vibrancy and charisma of the villagers, even while in times of hardship. He seems to go out of his way to incorporate different cultures and languages existing in Iran, making clear that the nation is not homogenous.
