Bella’s story—mentally a child yet physically a woman—is not an entirely fictional one. Isolated and sheltered within Dr. Godwin’s esoteric mansion, she is given no opportunity to mature. Her journey serves as an allegory for generations of upper-class women kept in a state of intellectual confinement, expected to provide pleasure to men while being treated as children and warned of the world’s dangers.
The message of Poor Things escapes me. As an exploration of female sexuality, it completely falls short.…
