    Under the Silver Lake

    ★★★★½

We crave mystery because there’s none left”, a character proclaims, piloting a drone through the hills of Silver Lake to peep at unsuspecting women. The digital age has undoubtedly cast light on many of life’s long-thought secrets. It used to be you could just walk outside and stumble upon undiscovered artifacts, but computers (and by extension, cameras) ushered in an era of knowledge. To be connected means to know facts and truths.

Under the Silver Lake is a neo-noir film with…

Entities of the occult are stronger than ever. In the modern age, stories of spooks and specters are tall tales cautionary to no one; allowing their misdeeds to go unpunished and relatively unnoticed. Even a zombified corpse trotting her way through glass and a horde of policemen, unfazed by gunshots, can be attributed to an overdose of a pain-nullifying narcotic.

Enter Uncle Feng: a “Magic Cop” skilled in spiritual apprehension; able to weaponize any spare item lying around into a…

    What You Wish For

    ★★★★

A perfect example of going into a film blind. Don’t read any detailed reviews; just know it’s a thriller, and let the suspense unravel.

The story which follows isn’t entirely original, but unveiled so suddenly, depicted so inescapable, and subtly avoids certain genre tropes! This isn’t so much a review, as it a recommendation.

    Friday the 13th Part 2

    ★★★

Part 2 is mostly a rehash of part 1. However, the subtle differences are what make it important.

A sequel, by nature, Part 2 is almost a reboot by setting the stage for the new villain who would go on to helm the infamous series.

The film uses the same lurking POV movements, ominous chirping, and I actually enjoy the hockey mask not being introduced yet. The reality is: it wasn’t in the plans, but I like to perceive it as a slow build to creating the undead immortal monster we know today as Jason Voorhees!

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie

    ★★★½

What a time to be alive. Today I sat in a theater to not only watch a 2-D animated feature, but a Looney Tunes feature! Regardless of quality, this was getting a ticket out of me merely to support the art of the medium.

I was delighted to be accompanied by a robust theater, full of children and families. Dozens of little eyes fixed on these golden icons doing what they do best. These aren’t Minions fumbling across the screen.…

    A Woman Under the Influence

Looks like I’m really in the minority on this one, but it just did not work for me. Any construct of a film is engulfed by noise; shouting matches and even playful banter, but always with multiple people talking at once or repetitive dialogue.

It took me some time just to even get a grasp on the plot; differentiating between eccentric behavior and genuine madness. Heck, I just thought the lady really liked spaghetti.

Well, at least it left Tchaikovsky resonating in my head!
