Lights of New York 1928
I only wish that Warner Bros. had picked something slightly more interesting to present as the first full talkie. Having originally been intended to be a two-reel short, Lights of New York feels incredibly bland.
The concept is nothing spectacular: a young man is conned into fronting for a speakeasy. Simple, straightforward and very dry. It’s clear that the restriction of sound took its toll, with static camerawork and actors glued in place for the greatest chance of being picked…
