loved loved loved that this film knew the exact moment to zoom out from enthralling, if catty, men-in-rooms politicking to a deeply sincere reflection on the nature and responsibilities of faith and spiritual institutions in today’s world. the ability to ground an ultimately religious text in contemporary sociopolitical context can be hard to calibrate, and for me conclave perfectly straddles the balance between artistry, ethnography, and philosophy
and layer on top a cast of basically perfect performances, incredible sound design, and some breathtaking shots???? god what a movie

honestly thought this film would trot out the usual platitudes about filial piety and treasuring your elders before they’re gone and it did but it was also about grief? also about intergenerational trauma? also about the minute beauty of seeing the ones you love happy and content? about the complex nuances that distinguish loving someone and taking care of them? about the angers and injustices of having all your days revolve around one person?? and the guilt and fear of breaking out…
