Very special experience watching this with my friend’s family (from Salzburg) in Salzburg. Their first time seeing it!
Some thoughts!
To preface, I am aware my comments are largely in relation to this movie’s interaction with Dracula. In my defence, Nosferatu films are often recognised as a loose adaptation of Stoker’s gothic.
Thematically, compared to Dracula, there’s an an obviously explicit focus on sexuality, and this is in a manner reconfigured for the adapted story, for instance, without the characterisation of Mina/Lucy in the original novel. The term 木漏れ日 (komoberi) is beautiful, and quite aptly captures the central focus of the film in one word. I loved the message of the film. The final shot was well done and and ties it together quite clearly.
I agree with some reviews that point towards the lack of realism about the reality of toilet cleaning (mightn’t it be more dirty?) and can appreciate some thoughts provided about the fetishisation of working class and the representation of a specific…
