Formulaic, morally inept, and very entertaining. The draw here is getting to see past and present hotties Pitt and Redford light up the screen. They look so much alike at times it feels like we’ve got old and young Benjamin Buttons squaring off. The film’s rollicking ride through failed US Cold War policies takes us through Vietnam jungles, Beirut rooftops, and Chinese prisons. The story comes across as very hollow politically, but Tony Scott does give the film a visually…

First Blood 1982
Not at all what I expected. For some reason I always thought this was a Predator-type jungle action movie. I didn’t realize it was set in the States and that the main character had this much emotional depth. The themes of isolation and excessive police brutality really hit home for me.
Stallone’s portrayal of Rambo is excellent. His cartoonishly ripped body and the physicality he approaches the role with suggest something of a silent film “strongman,” but he proves…

“There are ways to keep playing”
Went in knowing nothing and got everything I could have wanted and more. Simply put, it’s a perfect day at the ballpark. The story is staged as a quixotic final game with escalating challenges, but watching the movie feels like being at an actual game. People arrive and people leave. Moments of tension and excitement are interrupted by humorous asides and open questioning of what the point of all this is, but everyone stays in it and the game goes on. Maybe life is a bit like that too.

Sisters with Transistors 2020
A fun trip down music school memory lane. Still think Clara Rockmore is the absolute coolest. Also loved learning about Delia Derbyshire — I hadn't heard of her before.

Anatomy of a Fall 2023
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Definitely going to rewatch this at some point and likely will rate it even higher then.
1) My favorite thing about this movie is that it doesn’t use the camera’s gaze as a stand-in for the truth. You see what you see at the outset and that’s all you get. What the characters think occurred is much more interesting than what the camera could have presented to us as “truth”
2) I love all the long takes of tight…Translated from by -
I'm Still Here 2024
I was familiar with the prevalent practice of disappearances across South America during this time period but was not familiar with the story of the Paiva family. Watching the opening portion of the film I really fell in love with them and resolved to replicate their family dynamic in my life. A house full of kids, friends coming over, music and dancing — an inviting home that anyone would want to be a part of. It just makes the…
