    The Batman

    ★★★★★

From its first 15 minutes, The Batman shows a strikingly potent understanding of the character. Crime is rampant through Gotham City; citizens held at gunpoint, buildings on fire, chaos at every turn. The only thing keeping the city on its foundations is a symbol… a symbol of fear. The Batman isn’t a man, he is a manifestation. Not only are the thugs afraid of it, so are the people. Is he lurking in the shadows, or is he the shadows themselves? Should we trust this vigilante, or cower in fear from his might? However we may think, the symbol will be there. And so will vengeance.

I cried in a Barnes and Noble bathroom a half hour after watching this.

Marriage Story is a true testament to Noah Baumbach’s whole career up to this point. It has the ferocity of Meyerowitz, the wit of Frances Ha, the sincere reality of The Squid and the Whale, and the fun of While We’re Young. While all of these movie I enjoyed on their own, all of the great aspects of each film came together into the incredible project that is Marriage Story, which is why it is Baumbach’s best and one of the best of the year.
