Improves on part one in every area but one: the script. Other reviews will praise the cinematography, sound editing, and performances (Zendaya and Javier Bardem are standouts), but I’ll focus on the dialogue. The filmmakers are so exacting with technical details, the craft of cinema, but the script is painfully plain. It’s not as the source material is Shakespeare, though I do love it. A true missed opportunity. A real writer could have elevated this so much.
Still, a spectacular film. See it in imax, or the largest screen around.

The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes 2023
Peter Dinklage gives one of the worst performances of the year. In his defense, the filmmakers did cast him as a man named Highbottom, so perhaps his lack of effort was justified. Otherwise, the third and final act feels like something that was accidentally spliced in from a completely different movie. There are some unintentionally hilarious moments, so I’ll say two stars.
