Cosmic horror is difficult to execute in cinema, but I'm always happy to see any attempt to do so; especially when executed as earnestly as it is here. The Carpenter worship is strong, the practical effects are brilliant and bloody, the cultists are intimidating and the creatures disgusting. Let down by some thin characterisation, inconsistent acting and second act pacing issues but still worth a watch for any fans of Lovecraftian horror.

Damian McCarthy ticks a lot of boxes for me with his tense, supernatural mysteries. Despite a couple of plot contrivances and some crude misrepresentation of psychiatric care, Oddity still shines as my favourite horror film of 2024. The atmosphere is spot on and the scarce jumpscares are well constructed and well earned. Carolyn Bracken's performance shows excellent range playing the two sisters with their disparate personalities. The level of polish compared to Caveat is hard to ignore with regards to both the screenwriting and production values, and I eagerly await McCarthy's next film.

An incredibly bleak viewing experience, and one that shouldn't be taken lightly. A slow-burning descent into the pits of depression and hopelessness. Atmospheric, dreary, uncomfortable and disturbing.
