Set during China's feudal era, this tale depicts a young woman forced to marry an older man with three existing wives. She quickly discovers that their marriage is a perpetual struggle for the husband's favour among the wives.
It is no doubt a feminist work, exposing the patriarchal norms of China's warlord era. Upon its release, it was banned in the country.

Essentially an "anti-Bond" film (which is basically a term for spy films where the protagonist becomes rebellious).

Fassbender didn't quite need to show his range as the film pretty much depicts him in a single tone. Even in moments of heightened emotion, he exhibits only a limited range of expressions.

    Slow-paced, but watchable.
