This might be a daft thing to say but it really FEELS like you’re on a sightseeing tour rather than watching a movie. The dialogue is naturalistic, the pacing is unhurried and the plot is unremarkable, leaving the characters and the setting to come to the fore.

Gripping, tender; gritty, colourful. Like the chicken making its madcap dash from the cleaver in the opening interlude, life is cheap in the favela. Terrifying gangsters, crooked cops and societal neglect keep the inhabitants of the city of god trapped in a nightmare of alienation and violence and poverty from which they can’t escape. But the vibrancy of the favela, its characters, soundtrack, and backdrop make it an alluring and charming watch all the same
