Every leprosy sanatorium in Japan has churches and Buddhist temples (except Okinawa w/ no temple). During their forced quarantine from society, some patients decided on religion to prepare for their death.

Interesting how leprosy is interpreted as a punishment in Buddhism & early Christians but during the Middle Ages in Europe, lepers gained partial favoritism from Christians because Jesus' interaction with lepers led to viewing the lepers as "chosen by God" or seeing the disease as a means of obtaining access to heaven.

Guilt is stronger when you experience a recent loss of a loved one. Adelaida commits typical adolescent activities behind her parents back and receives the parental scolding. After the death of her mother, Ade listens to her 'dad gets mad'-broken-record-player-script after her father discovers that she brought a boy over to their house. That night, Ade wakes up and sees her mother staring. Watching over her. The fear of upholding the dead's expectation of you and the guilt that comes with them disppointed is beautifully explained in this slow yet deserving film.
