In the set-up you see the children as possessed by some otherworldly corruption, only to realize later that you’ve been viewing them from the perspective of the purity-obsessed governess. It’s a masterful way of implicating the audience in their abuse, doled out by an authority figure who loudly proclaims her status as savior.
