  I’m not really familiar with this world outside of the 1939 movie, so I might be biased, but this feels so uninspired. It’s trying too hard to be “real” that it feels almost completely devoid of any charm or whimsy. The paradox of slathering everything with digital flair in an attempt to make things look more real, vibrant, and with added depth is that it makes everything look fake, lifeless, and flat. Putting everything in drab natural lighting exacerbates this.…

  What I love about Bong Joon Ho is that he's such a great conceptualist that even the more surreal parts of his movies never feel fully out of reach. Some might say he's too obvious, and I don't think that's invalid; but if it feels obvious, it’s because the characters and scenarios never feel like they couldn't exist in real life. This is a movie about people obsessed with artifice and cheapness, and the real-world people this movie satirizes are artificial and cheap themselves.

  I don't think this reaches the levels of some of his other movies, but I think it will age extremely well.
