If "Whiplash" isn't considered a horror film, it damn well should be. I don't think I relaxed my shoulders for a second sitting on my couch yesterday. It is, as the saying goes, "as tight as a snare drum" in how it is both scripted and edited, and so taut emotionally that you know the next outburst could come flying out of nowhere at any moment.

"The Theory of Everything" opens with an unfocused shot of our wheelchair-bound protagonist and his endearing (if somewhat estranged) family bathed in golden afternoon sunlight in the regal hallways of Buckingham Palace. In some ways, I think James Marsh might have preferred his entire film to appear coated in this amorphous haze, as what he and his editors have cut up for the final product hardly does the giddy, nostalgic air of that moment justice.
