This whole movie was incredibly on the nose, not as much evolution as I think there needed to be, but there were some really nice scenes (I am a fan of the ending, mostly anyway). Some of the music was pretty cool. Ryan Gsoling did a good job in this but his character is, of course, impossible to like. I found his character intriguing though.
Pacing wasn't bad but the messages were way too visible I think, it got a bit cheesy, the editing at times was a little too jumpy for my tastes. But I think it was pretty neat.

Lots of interesting visual gags. Honestly I thought that the film was pretty well put together (of course, it's a Scorsese), but I'll admit it felt a bit aimless. But maybe that's how it's supposed to feel, as aimless as a city on fire. I'm not a fan, but I can say that it wasn't bad at all. Liked the end credits. Of course it is a shame that some people try to be like Travis despite the film simply putting on display that the people you see as scum... you're no better at all.

I'm going to have to see this film again. Upon first watch I honestly think the writing could have been much better. The worldbuilding of the film is interesting and the plot is intriguing, but the film's structure and the character interactions are very off-center and do not lend itself to the story. I know it's supposed to feel distant because it takes place in a fabrication of the future, but no one feels real.

Fun, kitsch, funny, and kinda cute. That's John Waters' Hairspray. Glad I finally got to see it, and I'm glad it ended up being more than what I thought it was, a prototype of a jukebox musical. Neat-o.
