He reminds me of so many people I've known, and I don't think that they have any clue
I had to watch this film for my World Religions class, in order to contextualize the distinctive worldview of animistic shamanism as regards what is called "mental illness" in the modern West.
I found it to be greatly illuminating in many respects, primarily on personal matters, and it offered a great opportunity for reflection. I was already fairly studied on the matter at hand, so I didn't obtain much new factual information, but experiencing the stories of the people interviewed…
From a historical point of view, an absolutely ludicrous film.
Taken in its own right, an enjoyable experience. Joaquin Phoenix does a great job as the neurotic Commodus. The Dead Can Dance soundtrack is phenomenal. A decent film overall.
(Ridley Scott needs to chill with the slo-mo scenes though, seriously).
