  can’t decipher the message here

  is this a film about loneliness? the only reason these people are lonely is because they let their cynicism get in the way of forming new connections outside of each other. this would be a good trope anywhere else, but here, its portrayal is inherently xenophobic. bob doesn’t speak a word of japanese, but isn’t receptive to bilingual japanese and english speakers who don’t pronounce english words the way he would prefer. mispronunciations are used…
