Last Breath 2025
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Sufficiently tense for its middle third, and the attention to detail in every lever, hiss and dial conveys an unabashed kind of devotion to the process that I think some films like this lack. Unfortunately, it feels too thin, too rushed (by necessity, which I offer only as an explanation, and not an excuse), too perfunctory, and, I'm sorry, anti-climactic. The last charge is not their fault, of course; they're bound by the true story. But -- apologies again to an incredible feat -- as happy as the outcome is, it isn't cinematic.

BARDO, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths 2022
Iñárritu introduced Bardo with a caution: do not look for a deeper meaning; there is no logic in dreams. It almost came across as the same marching drum beat you hear around Marvel films - just turn your brain off! That lobotomy-adjacent advice did not dull the itching of this two-and-a-half hour or two-and-a-half year disjointed liminal diary entry.
CGI fetuses aside (is Netflix stipulating their inclusion this year?) I can only assume that the inter-festival re-cut benefitted the first…

The Monkey 2025
A funny chaser to the sour ominousness of Longlegs, in which there’s virtually no space for humour (dark or otherwise), so it makes sense for OP to go somewhat gonzo with the follow-up. The Monkey sustains itself on its humor more than its horror — the kills are, as advertised, pretty outrageous. The thinly realized, somewhat glib plotting grows absurd in its own right, one that feels tired compared to the exemplary violence that takes place, but there’s just enough twisted comedy…
