The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie 1969
I remember reading the original novel and being ashamed of falling for Miss Jean Brodie's world. When her Fascist sympathys were revealed I felt deeply wrong because looking back it made so much sense.
The lessons of this story about human behaviour have been fundamental in how I view the world.
I've had the following phrase swirling in my head for a while. I've never known where it came from, it seemed to be the antithesis of my artistic life and philosophy but I now realise it was learned from Muriel Spark.

Your Cheatin' Heart 1990
This thing has so many problems but I don't care! I don't think I ever understood what was going on for all 6 episodes, but the world, which I have never known, yet feels so familiar, is so engrossing. Somehow seeing Glasgow being filtered through this bizarre country asethetic makes it seem even more recognisable.
