Many reviews I’ve encountered appear to view the film through the lens of “never cheat…because she could be crazy.” While Alex (Glenn Close) does exhibit clear signs of mental illness, viewing her solely in this light is rather detrimental to the message of the film. Her character embodies, to the extreme, the repercussions of unfaithfulness to overturn and derail relationships and lives. As everything steers out of control, I frequently caught myself not so much rooting for Dan (Michael Douglas) to overcome and escape Alex’s obsession as I was dreading the consequences he has brought upon himself and his family.
After knowing of this film for over a decade, I was elated to finally get around to watching. The score was electrifying, the effects were characteristically insane for Carpenter, and the 80’s camp was palpable.
Going into the film, I knew its influence on the Mortal Kombat franchise, but was surprised to further witness the clear inspiration for the aesthetic and setting of the TMNT universe: rival street gangs, martial arts in urban sewers, a comically hyperbolized Chinatown, etc.
Brazenly bumbling Kurt Russell. Sinister James Hong. Lightning-paced plot points. A character named Lightning that wields lightning. Proper absurdity.
