On its surface, it’s a love story but dig deeper to find an anti-extractivist allegory.
Keep it in the ground, like Indigenous people have said. Return the sacred to its original owners. Close the door on extraction and remember the voices of those who came before to reveal the lock and key.
An incredible 3-hour Indian dance film has been restored. The new print is banned from being shown in India, probably due to it being, in part, a moving feminist Communist propaganda film critical of the Indian government. There's also a copyright dispute and criticism of its restoration taking place outside of India, in Bologna. There are eighty different Indian dance forms included and while it's banned it's also being claimed a national treasure there. It's directed by, and stars, Uday Shankar, Ravi Shankar's brother. Each time it seems to reach peak subversiveness, it subverts itself again.

Most reviews I’ve read on here are homophobic and none of them talk about the incredible communist playground scenes or the antifascist music.
The pacing or editing of each episode was somewhat inconsistent, sometimes confusing. But the jerky pacing echoed the story’s chaotic twists, like the brutal punches of misogyny and the aunt’s driving style.
Music, aside from Rosa Balistreri and rousing leftist folk songs, occasionally took over where it didn’t feel necessary. I did enjoy the arresting reversal of diagetic…
